Win the battle over Vegetables

Top level Community Health Services Dietetics and Nutrition

It's quite common for battles to occur at the dinner table when it comes to children eating vegetables - or should I say not eating vegetables.

Some vegetables can have a bitter taste and may not initially appeal to children. Often children need to taste a new food up to 8 different times before accepting it. This can be quite frustrating for parents who have made numerous attempts at cooking tasty and appealing meals.....

Some of the following hints may help your child to eat more vegetables:

·Try to offer the sweeter vegetables such as peas, corn, sweet potato and carrots initially

·Offer vegetables in raw snack size pieces. Children may prefer finger foods to using cutlery.

·Place vegetables on a serving dish so everyone can help himself or herself.

·Parents can set a good example at the dinner table by trying a variety of vegetables as well

·Use dipping sauces, yoghurt, white sauces etc. to dunk vegetables. Often children will play with the vegetables this way before eating them

·Grate vegetables into dishes such as soups, pasta sauces, casseroles, hamburger, or meatloaf. You can even add vegetables added to cakes, scones and pancakes, for something a little different.

·Get your children to help you with the cooking. They are more likely to eat what they have prepared for themselves.

If you are concerned about your child's food intake contact your local community health service staff who can put you in touch with a Dietitian
