What Do Physiotherapists Do?

Physiotherapists assess and treat a wide range of conditions, using a number of physical techniques to help with your rehabilitation. Some of these techniques are:

  1. Exercise: Most conditions referred to physiotherapy respond to specific exercises. The prescribed exercises need to be done as you have been shown for them to be effective. You must let you physiotherapist know if the exercises are causing pain or other problems. Exercises may be done in the pool (Click here to view the Exercise Classes schedule for the Heated Pool & Spa) or by joining a group exercise class.
  2. Joint Mobilisation and manipulation techniques are used to improve the function of joints to help get them working properly.
  3. Modalities such as heat, cold, electrotherapy and ultrasound may be used to assist with your recovery.
  4. Equipment Prescription: Occasionally walking aids, splints, braces or other types of equipment will be suggested to assist you.

Who Do We See?

Health Care Card holders and Pensioners are eligible to attend physiotherapy. You will need to obtain a referral from General Practitioner, Medical Specialist or other health professional.

Fees

Fees apply for a number of physiotherapy services. A brochure outlining costs is available that explains the charges in detail. In general, fees are $5 per visit for Pension and Health Care Cardholders and $8 for non-concession.

What to Expect

At the initial consultation a thorough history will be taken. Once the exact nature of your problem has been determined a treatment program can be discussed with you. Treatment sessions will be over a maximum of six sessions. Any further sessions will be dependent on you making satisfactory progress.

What do you Need to Do?

You will need to be involved in the suggested treatment program because it is you that will have to commit to and carry out your exercises in order to get better. To help you achieve your best level of functioning requires you to participate fully in your rehabilitation. This means carrying out your treatment plan as has been discussed with you and reporting difficulties and successes to your physiotherapist. Usually success requires some effort.

Appointments

Appointments are held in normal business hours. They last from 45 minutes for the first appointment and up to 30 minutes for appointments after that. For the first appointment please bring with you:

  • Your doctor's referral (if you have it)
  • Your X-rays or other reports that may be relevant to your condition.
  • Your Medicare Card and Health Care Card or Pension Card.

It is very important if you cannot attend an appointment that you give 24 hours notice whenever possible.

This will enable other people who have been waiting for appointments to be notified.
