Women's Health Advisory Council
In December 2003, the Minister for Health, the Hon Lea Stevens MP established the first ever Women's Health Ministerial Advisory Council in SA. The new Council will boost the profile and priority of women's health at a very important time in the Government's health reform effort, and work with the Minister to ensure the reform agenda is inclusive of women and women's issues. Marg Brown is a representative of this committee in her role as the national chair of Health Consumers of Rural and Remote Australia.

"The Public Outcomes Funding Agreement (PHOFA) is currently being renegotiated with the Commonwealth Government. The Rural Women's Health Programs, the prevention of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) program and a number of other public health programs are funded under this program in South Australia. A number of women's groups have been concerned with the omission of references to women's health. The SA Minister for health (the Hon. Lea Stevens) has made strong representations to the Federal Minister for the inclusion of a further PHOFA category 'Promoting Women's Health'. Also of concern is the lack of growth funding provided for breast screening services, which will severely affect the participation rate of women in the target population of 50-69 years.
The Minister has said that she is hopeful of a satisfactory outcome. "I have always enjoyed a good working relationship with my Federal Colleague, the Hon. Tony Abbott MP, and have found him to be responsive to reasonable argument. I urge all women across the political spectrum to present their concerns to the Federal Minister.""Dept. of Health: Reform News July 2004
